Staying secure with McAfee

Quick Tip: If you're a PC user, double-click the McAfee icon on your desktop to open the McAfee SecurityCenter window. If you need more help, or are an Apple Mac user, select from the list of questions below.

First remove your existing security software:

When you are ready to install McAfee, go to sky.com/security and follow the directions to download:

  • McAfee Internet Security Suite - for PC users with Windows 2000, XP and Vista
  • McAfee VirusScan - for Mac users with OS X v10.4 'Tiger' or above, Power PC or Mac with Intel
  • McAfee Virex - for Mac users with OS X v10.3 'Panther' or earlier

PC users: As soon as you are up and running on Sky Broadband, double-click on the McAfee SecurityCenter icon on your desktop to register. This will enable automatic updates of your McAfee virus and security software, to help keep you protected at all times.

Carefully note the email address and password you use to register your McAfee software. Your email address and password provide you with access to your online McAfee account, where you can reinstall your software if needed, at any time you want. You will also be prompted from time to time to enter your registration details, for example after McAfee sends through an upgrade of your software.

Mac users: As soon as you are up and running on Sky Broadband, double-click the McAfee Virex or VirusScan icon in the Applications folder. This will enable automatic updates of your McAfee virus software.

Once the software has been installed, we recommend that you perform an initial manual check to make sure you have the latest updates. To do this, simply click on the update icon in the top left-hand corner of the McAfee Security Center.

Once you've finished, you can check the parental control settings for each user as follows:

  • Open the Security Center.
  • Click Configure at the bottom of the screen (near View Details), and select Users.
  • Under the Users section, click Advanced.
  • Make sure Parental Controls is selected (top left corner of the box).

Yes - as an Administrator, you can set a user's content rating group and then block or allow websites based on those groups. If you want to rate content for a user more strictly, you can also prevent the user from browsing any websites that are not included in the global Allow Web Sites list.

A user can belong to one of the following content rating groups:

  • Young child
  • Child
  • Younger teenager
  • Older teenager
  • Adult

By default, a new user is automatically added to the Adult group.

To access the list of blocked and allowed websites, follow these steps:

As an Administrator, you can also block websites based on the keywords that the websites contain. McAfee maintains a default list of keywords and corresponding rules, which determines whether a user of a certain age group is permitted to browse a website where a keyword exists. When keyword scanning is enabled, the default list of keywords is used to rate content for users. However, you can add your own allowable keywords to the default list and associate these with certain age groups. Keyword rules that you add will override a rule that might be associated with a matching keyword in the default list. You can either look up existing keywords or specify new keywords to associate with certain age groups.

  • Allowing websites. If you are an Administrator, you can allow all users to access a particular website, overriding any default settings and blocked websites.
  • Allowing websites to set cookies. If you block all websites from reading the cookies they set on your computer, or configure certain users to receive a message prompt before cookies are accepted, and then find that certain websites do not function properly, you can allow those sites to read their cookies.
  • Blocking potentially inappropriate web images. You can protect members of your family by blocking potentially inappropriate images from appearing when browsing the internet. Images are blocked for all users except members of the adult age group.

Some websites create small files on your computer called cookies to monitor your personal preferences and browsing habits. As an Administrator, you can assign one of the following cookie blocking levels to a user:

  • Accept all cookies - allows websites to read the cookies that they set on your computer when the corresponding user is logged in.
  • Reject all cookies - prevents websites from reading the cookies.
  • Prompt user to accept all cookies - prompts the user each time a website attempts to set a cookie on your computer. The user can then decide whether to allow cookies on a case-by-case basis. After the user decides to accept or reject cookies for a particular website, they are not prompted again for that website.

If you choose to set your McAfee Security to reject all cookies, this may prevent you from being able to access or sign into some websites - for example when you are signing into a website to check email, or make a purchase.

If your McAfee Security is set to block cookies, this may prevent you from being able to sign into some websites - for example when you are signing into a website to check email, or make a purchase. To check your cookie settings:

  • Double-click on the McAfee Security Center icon on your computer desktop.
  • Select Configure in the Security Center Information screen.
  • In the Configuration screen, select Users in the main screen, and then click on the Advanced button.
  • In the Parental Controls screen, use the drop-down menu to select each user you have set up - 'Administrator' is the only user set up by default, but if you are using parental controls you will also have additional users set up for other people using the computer. Select Cookie Blocking to see whether cookies are accepted, or being rejected/blocked.

Yes - as an Administrator, you can use the internet time limits grid to specify if and when a user can access the internet. You can grant a user unrestricted internet use, limited internet use, or prohibit internet use entirely.

The internet time limits grid allows you to specify time limits in 30-minute intervals. Green portions of the grid represent the days and times during which the user can access the internet. Red portions of the grid represent the days and times during which access is denied. If a user tries to access the internet during a prohibited period, McAfee notifies the user that they cannot do so. If you prohibit a user from accessing the internet entirely, that user can log in and use the computer, but not the internet.

Do's:

  • Keep Windows fully updated, as this will minimise security risks.
  • Ensure that there are no hidden and/or dormant infections on your computer, by performing a full manual scan once a week.

Don'ts:

  • Don't disable the McAfee VirusScan or Personal Firewall completely. If you do need to disable McAfee software, always remember to enable it again as soon as possible to ensure you are protected online.
  • If you find an infected file, we recommend you clean or quarantine it rather than immediately deleting it.
  • Do not change more than one or two settings in the McAfee software at once, and test the changes out before you change anything else.
  • Do not always automatically trust downloads or other online content. They may contain hidden infections.

To check the settings for McAfee Personal Firewall (Internet Security Suite only):

  • Double-click on the McAfee Security Center icon on your computer desktop.
  • Select Internet & Network in the main Security Center screen, and then select Configure in the menu that appears on the right side of the screen.
  • In the Configuration screen, select Firewall Protection in the main screen, and then click on the Advanced button.
  • Select Program Permissions from the left-hand menu.
  • The Program Permissions screen will list all applications and programs that are either blocked or allowed. Use the Add Allowed Program and Add Blocked Program buttons to allow or block new applications, or adjust the level of access that existing applications already have.

If you are using an email program (such as Outlook Express, Outlook or Mac Mail), you can add your email accounts into McAfee SpamKiller by following the steps below:

  • Double-click on the McAfee Security Center icon on your computer desktop.
  • Select E-mail & IM in the main Security Center screen, and then click on Configure in the menu that appears to the right.
  • In the E-mail & IM Configuration screen, select Spam Protection in the main screen, and then click on the Advanced button.
  • In the Filtering Options screen, select E-mail Toolbars from the menu on the left.
  • In the E-mail Toolbars screen, select the email programs to which you would like McAfee to add SpamKiller protection by ticking the box next to the name of the email program you are using.
  • You will see that McAfee spam protection is running in your email, as there will be a new 'McAfee SpamKiller' menu displayed in your email application - select this to view and change the spam filtering settings, mark email as spam, etc.

If you check your email through a website (also known as 'webmail'), you can add McAfee SpamKiller protection to your email accounts by following the steps below:

  • Double-click on the McAfee Security Center icon on your computer desktop.
  • Select E-mail & IM in the main Security Center screen, and then click on Configure in the menu that appears to the right.
  • In the E-mail & IM Configuration screen, select Spam Protection in the main screen, and then click on the Advanced button.
  • In the Filtering Options screen, select Web Mail Accounts from the menu on the left.
  • In the Web Mail Accounts screen, select the Add button to set up filtering for your webmail.
  • You will need to complete the email account information for each of your webmail accounts - if you do not know these details, contact your email provider to request them.
  • Once you have set up spam filtering on these accounts, you can set how often McAfee should check the accounts for spam - make sure that you select Never dial a connection in the Connection Options screen, as if SpamKiller tries to dial a connection this could interfere with your Sky Broadband connection.

If you are using an email program (such as Outlook Express, Outlook or Mac Mail) and have McAfee SpamKiller protection running in this, any email that you mark as spam will be reported to McAfee.

To restore your McAfee firewall protection to its default settings:

  • Double-click on the McAfee Security Center icon on your computer desktop.
  • Select Restore Firewall Defaults from the left-hand menu in the main Security Center screen.
  • In the Restore Firewall Protection Defaults screen, select the Restore Defaults button.
  • You will be asked to confirm you want to restore the firewall configuration to the default settings - select Yes and your firewall settings will be restored.
